The Impact of Coding Over 30 Years

Posted January 29, 2013 9:00 AM

From Design News:

Over the past 30 years or so, coding has transformed the world -- from how it is built to the final software package. AutoCAD, C++, WordPerfect, and the Intel 8008 were introduced in 1982 and have shaped modern technology ever since.

I sure wish these "journalists" would do their research. The 8008 might have been the first but the MOS 6502 set the bar for cost effectiveness 3 years later.

"Also in 1982, AutoCAD software was introduced by Autodesk. AutoCAD has had a tremendous impact on the engineering community. Up until this time everything was hand drawn, most of the time using T-squares, triangles, and compasses."

And this is pure BS. I was doing 3D surface design and multi-axis machining on various CAD/CAM systems long before AutoCad was introduced. Most of the older CAD/CAM systems were not cost effective for general drawing creation unless you were a Fortune 100 company.

AutoDesk's biggest distinction was its marketing plan to leverage PC based CAD to severely undercut prices against the workstation/mainframe CAD companies.
