Another Close Asteroid Encounter for Earth Coming Friday

Posted February 13, 2013 7:41 AM

From CNET:

In a few days, sky watchers in Eastern Europe, Asia, and Australia will get a chance to see one big rock hurtling through the heavens. One very big rock. Compared with other asteroids traveling through space, this one may seem a relative pebble -- at half the size of a football field -- but for Earth, it will make for a relatively close call.

"This is a record-setting close approach," says Don Yeomans of NASA's Near Earth Object Program at JPL. "Since regular sky surveys began in the 1990s, we've never seen an object this big get so close to Earth."

I noticed that it's going to pass through the outer Van Allen Belt. I wonder if it's going to trigger aurorae by disturbing the ions trapped there as it crashes into them. No one has commented on this in any news reports I've seen, so I guess it's not much of a concern, but if the sky is clear I'll still take a look just in case.

I read a small bit about this from Purdue U. The article said it would pass inside the range of some of the telecommunications satellites in orbit.

I imagine a really interesting light show with the rock taking out just one device, and that field of shrapnel taking out a few more.

Forgive my ignorance on this subject. I have no knowledge of the possibilities here. I do understand the chances are likely very low.

My imagination gets carried away. But the worst case scenario could be beautiful to see.
