'Wearable' Polymer Could Charge Phones From Body Heat

Posted February 15, 2013 3:35 PM

A new material that generates electricity from body heat could lead to clothing that can keep a mobile phone charged.

The material developed by scientists in South Korea is an organic thermoelectric generator (TEG) that produces an electric charge from the temperature difference between the body and the environment and can be formulated as a flexible, cuttable film.

The researchers from Yonsei University led by Eunkyoung Kim, synthesised a polymer based on an electrically conductive material known as PEDOT (poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)), which has been investigated for use protecting the cathodes and anodes in fuel cells from fouling.

Could this fabric could also cool the wearer by putting a larger load on the circuit requiring more body heat to charge it? If so that would be great for seat covers in hot climates or for people who cannot control their body heat. A portable cushion for cars could have a small computer fan as the load. The fan could force air through the cushion further cooling the person, as the person cooled the fan would slow down, the person heat up, the fan speed up etc. A set temperature could easily be achieved by either electronic or mechanical means.

Can't wait for it to be commercialised. A bed sheet made from this could mean a good nights sleep at last whilst recharging a 'phone or playing soft music.

" ... a material that has a power factor ... of 1270µM/m/K2 ..."

Anyone know what that means? M does not seem to be recognised in any system of units, and K2 is a mountain .

You got me wondering about that so I did some poking around and found this:

Now, Eunkyoung Kim and his team at Yonsei University in South Korea have developed a new thermoelectric material based on a material called PEDOT - poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) - which, they claim, shows a power factor of 1270 µW/mK2 - four times higher than any other conductive polymer published in the literature.

Apparently there was a typo in the units, in the linked article above. The italicized paragraph I copied is from:

Women going through menopause might be interested in this.

Figured it was just a typo. Why don't these sites get proof-readers?

... and why, in this day and age, can't they do a simple thing like displaying an index as a superscript (K2, not K2)? . (This one also applies to the site you linked).
