Scientists Built the Dream-Reading Machine

Posted April 07, 2013 10:41 AM

From Neatorama:

What did you dream about last night? Don't lie - science can tell! Researchers from Kyoto, Japan, have built a dream-reading machine that can pluck images straight out of your slumbering, dreaming brain: As the fMRI monitored blood flow to different parts of the subjects' brains, they drifted off to sleep; then, once the scientists noticed that they'd had entered stage 1, they woke them up and asked them to describe what they were previously seeing while dreaming. They repeated this process nearly 200 times for each of the participants.

If a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step (or beneath one's feet) then I'd say there are ~1,000 miles to go.

A little more fleshed-out article here. I generally back out a bit on specifics like this to a more general discussion. In this case, that would be dreaming, in general.

In thinking about the subject, my initial questions would be:

Do dreams have significance? Do you think dream analysis is worthwhile? And if so, does one size fit all -- are images and objects universally symbolic? (A large body of interpreters database assumes so.) What would you anticipate the usage of such technology? Add others if you wish.

Right of the bat, in answering my first question one has to consider that animals seem to dream. That gives a broader context to the discussion. (If there is one; discussion, I mean.)

And, if you're interested but feeling passive, you might still enjoy this BBC documentary about dreams.
