FBI to Fight Zombie Hordes

Posted June 15, 2007 9:36 AM

From BBC News:

The FBI is contacting more than one million PC owners who have had their computers hijacked by cyber criminals. The initiative is part of an ongoing project to thwart the use of hijacked home computers, or zombies, as launch platforms for hi-tech crimes. The FBI has found networks of zombie computers being used to spread spam, steal IDs and attack websites.

That's not how you fight zombies. This is a much better approach.

Geeze, thanks. I am trying to eat my breakfast here.

I find that a good hard drive Format will get rid of the problem (atleast with mine anyway).

Proud owner of a .30 cal Carbine AND a Saiga .308 with enough ammo to keep the hordes at bay for WEEKS!

Remember folks, just because you're paranoid it doesn't mean they're NOT out to get you.

Anyone who had their web browser hijacked, their machine suddenly slowed down to a grinding halt while their Hard Disk sweating frantically, could feel the effects of botting their machine.

Having your machine botted, pretty much defeats the purpose of web surfing or even having a personal computer in the first place, because what it really means is, that your machine is no longer yours to use, but instead, is controlled by some malicious program somewhere, in order to distribute mass amounts of spam, porn-piggybacks (porn photographs with weaved spyware or worms inside, to evoke those when opened), viruses, spyware or other such material, with your machine's available computing power, memory space and surfing-bandpass, at someone else's command, and used for their purposes, not yours anymore.

Harnessing multitude of personal computers, under an organised, centralised such command, to the effect of having a virtual giant super-computer, hijacked from their owner's use, is not much different than jacking a multitude of cars to perform a crime, while denying you the hard-earned use of your property.

All that is besides having to invest in anti-spy programs (such as spy-bot, to name but one) and having to tolerate the inherent burden of permanently slowing your machine.

Having a zombie machine, is pretty much being denied of your property by means of robbing you blind. To visualise, just compare it to such abuse of your car.
