Disruptors Video: The Energy Revolution

Posted June 15, 2007 2:01 PM

From The Next Net:

When I did my Disruptors roundtable tour this spring, one topic that kept coming up was energy, as you an see in this week's video. For the most part, the participating entrepreneurs were from the tech industry, but all they wanted to talk about was how to change the energy industry. In Boston, MIT professor Ken Morse declared it to be people's patriotic duty to have a windmill in their backyard.

HI !

I have some possible ideas on your Brian golden comment and the commenter about windmill power storage using all ready developed products plus a new version on a tried & true product. the answer is out there! you just need to think out of the box you seem to be putting yourselves in.

I am doing research in that area and there are answers out there.

can the government allow quick access to patents for nationally demanded answers ? This is needed to quickly solve this problem. Now it takes to long for the red tape & the expense is to high to get things done quickly.

thanks

"MIT professor Ken Morse declared it to be people's patriotic duty to have a windmill in their backyard."

With all due respect to the prof. he should know that a blanket statement such as his in regard to windmills is pure rubbish or obfuscation of the facts and common sense. Windmills need to be located in areas where there is wind. Too many locations do not have the wind power available to run windmills reliably.

Such foolishness cast a shadow on the rest of his recommendations/statements.

How very diplomatic of you. Here is my response......... <BONK> <BONK> <BONK> . That is me bashing my head against the desk. <BONK> <BONK>.

For a more detailed version of why Ken's comments and line of thinking is wrong refer to my comments in http://cr4.globalspec.com/blogentry/688#newcomments. Wind is (essentially) free, extracting it is not. Extracting motive energy from the wind (ie- getting a blade to turn) is easy, converting and storing this energy is not. Doing all this economically is not. Doing this while wasting less energy, materials and producing less pollution is not. Tying your system to the grid is even worse. Using it to charge your hybrid car is trying to solve the wrong problem.

<Sigh>. Why do I feel like I have said all this before.

HI ALL !

I just read an article on flywheels and storing energy in them instead or combined with batteries. the companies did tests and got power out of some for 7 to 9 hours, it all depends how you take out the power. i found the article in distributed energy magazine june/july issue 2007, look it up WWW.distributedenergy.com see page 22 through 28, there may be some answers here to your question.

thanks
