Are Screens Rotting Our Brains?

Posted May 15, 2013 8:22 AM

From BBC News - Technology:

Before my meeting with controversial neuroscientist and renowned social media cynic Susan Greenfield, I do two things - post a Facebook "check-in" from her base at Oxford University (which attracts five "likes" and a direct message), and mention her on Twitter. I have a feeling I am exactly the kind of person she is concerned about. Creativity, imagination, self-esteem and even our basic ability to process information could be sacrificed at the virtual altar of what is known as "hyperconnectivity", Baroness Greenfield claims. She is so convinced that she compares the situation to the early days of climate change.

...she compares the situation to the early days of climate change.

Ha, ha, ha. As if 'climate change' had some recent starting date. -- That date would be 4.6 billion years ago.

No, the starting date when the media took hold of the idea and really ran with it!

I prefer my brain rot to be from a good quality ethanol based beverage. I always like a good stout but I've migrated to single barrel Bourbons lately.

I prefer good quality single malt scotch myself. Often sipped while looking at the big flat screen.

Comparing something to the climate change hoopla is not likely to increase acceptance of her theories.

Personally, I'm burnt on all the connectivity, social sites, blah, blah, blah. I spend most of my time at work doing this crap, about the only non-work related thing I do regularly is CR4.

I think once people figure out how unfufilling this stuff is (except CR4 is awesome of course) , the trends will taper off and perhaps even begin to fall once they learn that crafting an exceptionally well-made long bow is infinitely more fufilling, or some gardening, or a walk in woods, or fishing at the lake, or hiking a mountain, or slow cooking a rump roast, or having dinner with family and friends, or drinking beer around a campfire, or reading a good book, or cleaning the commode, or . . . .
