Ew, Gross: Reusable Endoscopes Are Not Clean

Posted June 07, 2013 2:09 PM

From Popular Science - New Technology, Science News, The Future Now:

Biomatter remains on 15 percent of supposedly clean reusable endoscopes. Bleck. Yeesh. After surveying 275 reusable gastrointestinal endoscopes from U.S. hospitals, researchers found that 15 percent aren't up to cleanliness standards. Gastrointestinal endoscopes carry cameras into the small intestine, stomach or colon, to help doctors examine those areas. As you can imagine, they get pretty dirty. If they're not well cleaned, they can transmit microbes and other biological matter between people. Researchers from the technology company 3M gathered endoscopes from five U.S. hospitals. They found different numbers of substandard cleaning for different types of scopes.

Cleanness is a main issue in hospital setting.

Colonoscopes come from am unclean place and go to an unclean place.

Aside the yeesh factor.

Explain coherently, why your unclean is any different from anybody else's.

What makes your unclean privileged.

Stay coherent. YOU raised the issue.

This does not surprise me. Many years ago I used to supply components for endoscope cleaners/disinfectors. Once, when I was visiting one of the main dealers for a major endoscope manufacturer, they were showing me how an endoscope works, using a supposedly cleaned & serviced unit that was about to go back to its owner. Then a small piece of 'body matter' popped out of one of the channels. Yuk!!!

This applies to all items that are "re-used" where ever they are found.

Surgeries, hospitals, dentists, restaurants, etc. etc..

Dental instruments not only can but do pass on serious mouth infections.

That meal you just swallowed off that fork.... The hospital eye pressure test
you just had - the one after the last glaucoma, infected eye,.. patient....

Yes, I AM paranoid about this because, at best, people are uncaring on cleanliness,
and worse... if they dislike you! - Probably for a silly, imagined, reason of their own.

Even the simplest things go "wrong." I went for a blood test - after hundreds of them,
over the years, including the armed forces etc. Now, this "young girl" of a nurse used
a needle suitable only for a horse, and tries to push it right through my arm, into the bone!

Not to worry, I have given her a really good job reference for Auschwitz.

Take care, with whatever they do to you!

The employment executive was interviewing a young blonde for a position in the company.
He wanted to find out something about her personality, so he asked,
"If you could have a conversation with someone, living or dead, who would it be?"

The blonde quickly responded; "That's easy, the living one."
