What Is A Thermistor If Not An "Analog Temp Sensor"?

06/07/2013 7:10 PM

What is a thermistor (used as illustrated) if not a type of analog temperature sensor? Did anyone else find this post as irritating as I did?

The ruddy-faced lad in the video doesn't seem to realize that there are many devices that could be classified as analog temperature sensors. His incessant use of the phrase "analog temp sensors" just made the whole thing more irritating (to me). Seems TI are trying to brainwash everyone into believing that their device is the one-and-only "analog temp sensor"; temperature-dependent resistors and semiconductors, thermocouples and the like don't get a look in.

Agreed. The title was so dumb I didn't bother to read further.

Amen, with bells on.

An Analog Temp Sensor is: ANALOG

An NTC thermistor element: ANALOG

Both provide sensible voltages and impedances, hence A/D connection is ok.

What is your problem, what is your question, really? Once you get to formulate it, that is.

One of my favorites is Analog Devices AD590. It's a nice two wire analog temperature transducer that operates over a range of -55C to 150C. Essentially, it is a loop powered temperature controlled current source. Not cheap, but easy to use and to interface to any number of different devices.

Dear Sir Robin. Your choice is an elegant one.

Hovewer, based on the incoherence, I have reason to doubt, that the OP appreciates a temp controlled current source. His question is formulated in the voltage - resistance model.

Current, voltage, resistance. Mr. Ohm tells us they're all related anyways.

I afraid I must agree whole heartedly with you. One thing these young whippersnappers haven't figured out yet is that there is nothing new under the sun.

I love seeing the stunned look on a novice's face when I ask them a simple question. If this is so new, why can you describe or identify it with a few words?

After making my previous comment I decided to actually view the video.

WOW. TI should be embarrassed. Trying to sell a product to intelligent people by dumbing it down is insulting at best. The non-linear curve this bozo generates is purely due to the test circuit configuration. I guess TI expects (or possibly has observed) that software geeks cannot do elementary circuit theory. I find it very ironic that he mentions that a thermistor has a relatively high output impedance and a buffer might be needed to drive an A-D converter.
