A hot, steamy summer washing over your pets is the perfect
recipe for a flea infestation. Just the
thought of fleas can make people itchy, let alone the scratching they can cause
in your pet. Some pets are allergic to fleas, making the problem even more
serious.
Here are some of my favorite tips for getting rid of fleas.
Flea Prevention is Ideal
Take measures to prevent fleas before they even think about getting on board. Monthly spot treatments can be helpful for
cats and dogs. It's important to note that there are distinct formulations for
cats and dogs; choose the right one for your pet.
Flea collars may also help. Flea-repelling sprays can be
used before walks. Some of these are commercially prepared and there are
recipes for non-toxic versions you can make at home.
Rid Your Pet of Fleas
Even if fleas are present it's not too late - take action to
get rid of them! A flea bath is a quick method for killing fleas on a pet's
coat. Fleas like to hide near the ears, where the legs meet the body, and in
the paws. Pay attention to those areas! Be sure to follow the instructions on
the shampoo bottle; many formulas must be left on for five minutes or more
before rinsing.
Follow up with a spray to keep fleas away.
A flea comb works really well for pulling fleas out of the
coat. You may also find "flea dirt" which is the blood expelled by fleas. Flea
dirt can be hard to separate from hair with your fingers alone.
Rid Your Home of Fleas
Wash your pet's bedding frequently to rid it of fleas. A
flea's lifecycle is about 10 days; you may think the fleas are gone but the
next generation could be on the way.
Vacuum carpets and sweep floors daily. It may be helpful to
apply sprays that kill or repel fleas prior to cleaning. Empty trash cans and
vacuum cleaner bags to get fleas and their eggs out of the house.
Apply sprays to your yard and surrounding landscaping. These
can help prevent fleas from entering the house. Consider plants that naturally
repel fleas, like mint, rosemary, and lavender.
