Three Rules of Thumb

Posted September 20, 2013 12:00 AM by Milo

The Three Rules of Thumb are:

  1. Does this action attempt to deceive anyone or allow anyone to be deceived?
  2. Does this action gain or allow the gain of privilege or advantage to which I, or someone else would not otherwise be entitled?
  3. Would I be dissatisfied by the outcome if I were on the receiving end of this action?

If you answered "No" to each of these, you are good to go.

I think Thumb should go back to focusing on Thumbs traditional primary role as default digit of opposition. Providing opposition for the other digits is among Thumb's highest and best uses.

.

Thumb's rule #1 violates some basic tenets of sound rule making. Specifically it requires answering a question that cannot be known with certainly over a time without limit. '....allow anyone to be deceived?...' Contrails allow some people to be deceived into believing secret societies are spraying chemicals into the air for mass mind control..... it is unreasonable to suggest something might be designed such that it might never be instrumental in deceit.

.

Thumb's rule #2 seems to be a prohibition against engaging in most forms of open market competition. If you do not bid, you will not be gain the privilege of competing to complete the contract....

.

Thumb's rule #3 appears to be a reiteration of rule #2, perhaps in hopes of strengthening the prohibition on all open market competition.... If you hadn't made the bid to compete at the price you wanted, would you be dissatisfied facing the specifics of your bid... but originating from a competitor?

.

'...If you answered "No" to each of these, you are good to go.....'

.

I guess the appropriate response if to ask 'good to go.....where, exactly'?

.

Making rules does not appear to a good or elevated use of Thumb. While cross training can be beneficial, authority for rule making should immediately return entirely to Brain.

.

I think that this set of 3 rules of thumb can be applied (or should be) when making LAWS by a government or any entity dealing with governing a society of people. It will help to make fair laws (?!).

LAA-Lucke for the score! These were taken from the United States Military Academy at West Point Cadet Handbook. Congratulations for reading into the meaning and correctly inferring that these applied to those in a position of public trust. Critical thinking is recognizing and challenging assumptions. You recognized the public official assumption. Great job. Milo

"...'good to go.....where, exactly'?"

Unfortunately in my experience, where = Out The Door (to the unemployment line).

Guess I've worked at too many companies where bringing in a dollar is more important than ethics.

Coincidentally, most of those companies are kaput. But the instigators are still at large.

AH but how many rule makers can you think of that obviously have their thumbs up their butts and never use any form of brain function in what or how they make their rules?

All of these are things that every politician has to be able to "check off" as YES, before running for office!

Perfect example of why our current government is f***ed up...most things passed DO attempt to deceive...Pelosi's 'We have to pass it so we know what's in it.'

Entitlement people who voted for "obamacare" have now gotten our President to pay them additional money to make up for what their additional cost is going to be...that includes Senators, Representatives and all their employees...money to come from our taxes....what about the citizens of this land?

When these elected officials of ours found out what costs and problems were caused by this health care law...they voted to exempt themselves...WTF is going on? If you stacked all the CR4P in DC and composted it, the methane would solve our energy crisis. Three rules of thumb? I give them '3 fingers', remember the old 'read between the lines'

Upon reading these three rules, I thought it would be great to include them in the guidelines of our organization. It gives everyone a feeling that we're doing the right thing and if called to the carpet, we can defend ourselves.

Then I read that this came from West Point. It makes total sense, since the top military academies live by a credo. The military is about a team, not individuals, hence if they are focused on the team, then the machine runs well.

Thanks for sharing this.

...conversely, the egotist's "Three Rules of Thumb" would be: Me, Myself, and I. Which sounds suspiciously close to how most Milliniums seem to think these days.

Make that 4!
Rule of thumb or "fistimelle"... the distance between the belly of an English Longbow and the string, an archers measure of the bracing height of his bow using his fist with thumb extended.

A specialist's answer is always welcome on the boards.

These questions are critical to good leadership being exercised. The purpose of leadership is never to bring oneself to the spotlight/limelight. The reason someone should desire a leadership position is to he/she can help their organization function more effectively and efficiently. When that happens the "limelight" is subsequent and predictable.

When someone is in a leadership position they lose some freedom to do as they want because they are not just responsible only to themselves, they are responsible for the entity they represent. The most effective leadership is "servant leadership" because the leader is humble, competant, trustworthy, honorable and a man/woman of principled character.

The question of character is paramount to someone seeking a position of leadership. That character applies across the board in persoanl and public life. They cannot be separated. Integrity in principled thinking in ones walk and talk is everything. There will never be trust in a leader if there isn't a track record of integrity.

"The reason someone should desire a leadership position is to he/she can help their organization function more effectively and efficiently."

The key word is "should". Most reasons to persue a leadership role today, is power. The desire to play GOD by having control over others. There are only two choices in life; to lead or to follow.
