1912 8th Grade Exam: Fail Means No High School For You!

Dave Davidson posted a link to this test on the SME LinkedIn Group and of course I had to take the test.

1912 8th Grade Exam

This test determined whether or not you would be permitted to attend high school back in the day.

Had I not helped my wife with the teaching duties when we home schooled, I'd have done much worse than I did.

It's been a while…

Surprisingly little science.

Strong on technicalities of English and Geography; the Math was smaller portion of the test than I expected, but would stymie many job seekers today.

If you can pass the math questions on this, you are probably already a pretty good machinist or engineer.

And if you miss the one about the last battle of the civil war, it's probably because you guessed the one that wasn't listed as a choice.

Like I did.

Is 73% a good enough score for an individual that hasn't studied the colonisation of the Americas during the last millenium?

Well above average; I seriously doubt we could get to average had it been British -Centered...

I'm reminded of a line from the old BBC show 'All Creatures Great and Small', where the character Tristan said he 'did pretty well' on one of his veterinary school exams. (Then later points out he didn't say he 'passed', just that he 'did pretty well'.)

I think I did pretty well being most every answer I gave came up with a green highlight on the next screen.

However the site locked up on me so I don't have an actual score.

Oh well... Story of my life. If I do well on a test they take it away from me before I finish so it don't count but if I do bad everything is recorded in detail and attached to my permanent record.
