Without Chemistry Hacks, Life Itself Would Be...

Posted January 27, 2014 12:26 PM

From ScienceBlogs:

I'll admit right away at being cynical about the chemical industry, so I look suspiciously at information sent to me by the American Chemical Society. (Something comes from them every day.) But chemistry is science, and you need to know more about it and to see how it relates to your day to day existence. In this case, "Without Chemistry The Middle Class Lifestyle Would Possibly Be A Little Less Good …" What am I talking about? Have a look at this interesting video, the first in a series of chemistry life hacks, from the American Chemical Association...

My cynicism jumped way up when I read the last line on that poster.

While the chemists at Monsanto may be exploring ways to make life better, the horde of lawyers and accountants there have turned the corporation into a heartless, soulless monster trying to make the world dependent on their 'improved' crops that require buying fresh seeds from Monsanto every year, as just one example of their villainy.

Monsanto is trying to give Big Food the stranglehold on their field that Big Pharma does. This mindless pursuit of 'profit at all costs' is destroying the country, destroying the planet, all to benefit the 1% who want to show that they can have a biggest dic- er, bank account.

Chemistry, Biology, and Physics in and of themselves are sciences without moral values up or down. Humans must make ethical decisions in all matters relating to technology of all types, simply because the human mind can only plan ahead (for safety) when presented with a complete picture of the real data. As time progresses, technology seems to be out-stripping the ability to make affirmative moral choices related to the use of the technology. Previous generations never had this dilemma simply because technology was not advancing rapidly enough to be as large a problem.

Higher technology seems to be operating also in an environment where (1) it takes a large company with a huge research budget to bring new tech into practice, and (2) the larger companies can afford a big legal department. Small guys alone simply do not have the resources to compete on this playing field in the same way, but this is not so say that smaller companies cannot form into groups that can accomplish essentially the same things, and maybe even do things in a more agile way.
