Small Farmers in Developing Countries Benefiting Significantly from Genetically Modified Crops

Posted February 19, 2014 10:08 AM

From Phys.org - latest science and technology news stories:

Despite the proclamations of the so-called "organic" movement and the anti-industry activists, small farmers in developing countries are benefiting significantly from genetically modified crops, according to a large review of the peer-reviewed research literature by US consultants. Writing in the International Journal of Biotechnology, Janet Carpenter of JE Carpenter Consulting LLC in Boylston, Massachusetts explains how they see improvements in health, education, debt repayment, maternal care services and food security.

I think that overall, GM is going to end up being a good thing.

A huge problem in public perception, and one that has been caused by both the GM companies, and the GM detractors, is not being specific about exactly what has been modified, why, and exposing very specific problems in relation to GMO...such as those we are seeing with the failure of Roundup ready modification.

Unfortunately, the lack of transparency and honesty, has led to an attitude that throws out the baby with the bath water, and leads to calls for banning all GMOs, which is an equally bad idea.

Problem I see is The owner of GM food patents, will have a legal monopoly on our food production and supply.

Yeah that might be true in a parallel dimension, but here the patents only last for 20 years, farmers can freely choose what to grow and what seeds to use, consumers can buy what ever they want.......and you can't patent food...

No you can't patent life or the basics such as food, But the fight to patent GMO is still on. Its now who has the deeper pockets.

IN the 20 years the control is overwhelming. But now you have to drudge through the myths to get to actual facts. And even then you have to question it.

Thanks for that.

Lyn had told me on the other GMO thread, that US farmers that signed contracts with Monsanto, didn't have to buy new seed from them every year.

I had a feeling I was right.

Sign contracts???????/

Monsanto is in a PR compaign from its earlier runnins with farmers when Monsanto contaminated the farmers wheat from cross germination.

They won the court battle and also brought hardship to the farmers....... and when it was broadcasts, they tried to repair their image.

As far as contacts, farmers can be strong armed into signing contracts. Tyson is nortorist for this.

I laugh at people that say the good thing about farming is that you are your own boss....... that tells me they either don't know what they are talking about, or they're a politician....... which is the same thing

I hadn't heard about the wiki leaks. Looks like Monsanto is pulling strings at the highest levels........in both parties.

on some of the court cases, it sounds like the judges are in Monsanto's back pockets..... but it was so blatant, it have to question it.

but when it comes to big business, I'm not so surprised.

Remember This?

It's nice when you're an attorney and a politician to defend yourself that you did nothing illegal or unethical. Sometimes you just have to define the definition of the word 'is' is.

Yeah, I remember.

All of them become investment gurus when they get to Washington. If they aren't rich when they get there, it doesn't take long to catch up.

Up until recently, insider trading was completely legal for members of congress.
