EV Performance Gains on Combustion Competition

Posted March 17, 2014 12:00 PM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

Sure, electric vehicles are environmentally-friendly, but you're not going to win any races in one, right? Wrong. In this article, National Geographic tells us about some races electric vehicles will win: those that are part of the FIA Formula E Championship, described as "the world's first fully electric Grand Prix racing series." Besides these races, which pit vehicles with electric motors against each other, the article looks at improvements in EV technology that deliver surprising performance. Thanks to these improvements and continuing R&D, "performance electric cars" could be on the road toward true competition with internal combustion vehicles.

This is very good news. Formula racing always pushes the technological envelope forward, which eventually translates to new technology added into our daily drive cars.

Yes this is good news.

I don't know why the article stated that electrons were stored in the batteries...let's hope that the esteemed fellow who was allegedly being quoted meant energy (perhaps misquoted or paraphrased by the article's author?) or just used the word "electrons" as a descriptive, vernacular instrument only for explanatory purposes to a less critical audience.

Anyhow, it's been done before.....

Isle of Man have had an electric bike series, TT Zero, for a few years now too.

Listen to the regen engine braking in this Youtube,

Dude, these things are pretty quick!
