Tesla Plans Advanced Battery Factory

Posted April 04, 2014 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

By the time this is read, EV maker Tesla will have revealed detailed plans for its Giga battery factory. Initial reports indicate the facility will integrate all aspects of battery production - from precursor materials to cell, module, and pack production.

The goal is three-fold: accelerate the pace of battery innovation; drive down battery costs; and "create a compelling and affordable electric car in approximately three years."

Not knowing their business model, it would be interesting to see how there are going to drive down battery costs; and "create a compelling and affordable electric car in approximately three years."

In just three years is a very aggressive plan, even to use existing technology. It's my opinion that the cost of raw materials will be offsetting any efficiencies gained.

Too bad all those green energy companies that was nothing more than framing the fat government cash cow, burned up all the available low interest secured and unsecured loans and grant money.............

He is willing and is risking it all to make it happen.

Unfortunately I'm sure when and if he's successful, he will be villanized for being greedy.

This is very positive news. Battery technology will remain important for years, so any technical improvement or cost reduction is welcomed. However, I think that all electric drive vehicles will have on-board chargers in the future. There will be new technologies available soon to make that possible. One of those is the fuel cell, and Toyota will introduce a vehicle in 2015 that uses one to drive the traction motors directly. It will also charge whatever battery is needed. In the future, other ways to charge batteries or drive motors directly will be available.

Batteries that are available today are probably good enough once we have lightweight and cheap charging technology.
