From Engadget RSS Feed:
Looks like NASA wants to add more zing to its futuristic Z-series spacesuits, because the agency just revealed three far-out outer shell designs for the newest prototype.

Well, they're all based off te same core, the 'Buzz Lightyear,' the voting is for the style of 'identification/decoration' and some minor variants in joint design.
It seems like a repeat of the 'name the module' vote they did a while back, with 'Xemu' winning by a landslide in the write-in vote, even beating out the 'candidate choice' Serenity by an order of magnitude. NASA decided to go with Serenety, to the delight of Josh Wheaton fans everywhere.
I personally think they should have named the cupola viewing port the Angrydome, as a not to Futurama.
"I'm so upset! If anyone needs me I'll be in the angrydome!"

Yeah, it's like they rounded up the absolute WORST fashion designers they could find, inbred them with each other for thirty generations, lobotomised the resulting inbreds, them beat them all half to death with the Ugly Stick, and then took blurry photographs of the drawings those poor wretches were making on the walls of their cell using their own poop.
Okay, I think my metaphor took a wrong turn somewhere while I wasn't looking, but you get the idea, I hope. Personally, I voted for the 'least ugly' suit, Technology, which appears to be in the lead with 60% or so of the votes so far.
They do have some good ideas in the core concept, such as the Russian-style 'easy entry'/'airlock door' back, but we've seen that already as part of their 'exoplanet RV' buggy design, and the luminescent wires to allow for speedy location and identification of individuals. I could even see the glowing piping ised for communication, solid for 'normal activity,' A slow blink (long on, short off) for 'come over here, this is interesting.' and a fast blink (short on, short off) for 'I need help NOW!'

Oh they probably saw Buzz back when Toy Story 1 came out on DVD, it just took them this long to design and test spacesuit designs to the point where they're ready for production.
Once they got the 'keeping the person inside from don dying while doing worrk inside it' part solved, they went 'interactive' with a poll for the 'trivial fashion statement' part, the 'glowy wire' trim can be in any style, as long as it conveys the basic information of 'a person is standing here in the shadow of this moon rock' or 'My trim is red so you know I'm the Mission Commander, even if you can't see my face.'
