"Smart" guns are a dumb idea.

This device will not keep the gun from being used by a determined thief.

A 10 year old, maybe.

Keeping all your guns in a secure gun safe when not in your possession is the only safe way to own guns, today.

Now, having said that, I grew up in a house where there were rifles hung on the wall with ammunition stored with them. There was a 45 ACP on a shelf, out of sight.

My sister and brother NEVER, EVER considered touching them without permission, and adult supervision.

Times have changed.

This article is not about a smart gun. This article is about a high tech gun lock. There is a difference.

Not practically. "Smart" gun locks will be defeated as soon as they hit the market.

If you own 10 pistols/guns, which presumably this is directed toward, will you spend $3,000.00 USD to guard the triggers or will you keep them in your gun safe which you should already have?

These locks seem to be for careless dolts who leave firearms lying about.

I agree that this smart gun lock is an impractical farce. A true smart gun (like the one Judge Dredd wields) where the identity reader is built into the weapon, has some merits. But as anyone that has worked with any lock knows, there's always a work around.

Yeah, but "Smart Gun" in this context will even get gun HATERS to read it, whereas "Smart Gun Lock"? Meehhhhh, not so much, I'm thinking. In fact, most gun owners know about the tech for smart locks, and don't do more than cruise rapidly over the drivel most of the know-nothing-ABOUT-guns writer-hack crowd says, because we already know what the true gun-tech sources have said, and thus wind up spending too much of our energy spotting the stupid comments from this bunch.

And then there is the sheer added cost and complexity of a gun that could do what they are talking about. A gun is a tool, for crying out loud, and I know when I've put 250 rounds through mine in an evening on the range, it had taken a beating. It's made out of steel and solid polymers, and designed to take a beating from the recoil, but I'd hate to see what the 5k+ rounds it'll see in its life would do to fancy electronics. And I don't want to have to repair/replace/refurbish the electronics just to be able to fire the gun when I really, REALLY NEED it. Like to defend my home and family against intruders.

... Oh, hey, wait, homeys, I need to fix this little part here so I can use my STUPID gun!

Nope, the STUPID gun I have is the one I want. I'd rather have a gun I have to prevent the bad guy from taking and using against me (he'll have a hard time doing that with 2-3 .40JHP rounds in him) that will work when I need it, than a gun I can't trust to do it's job when it's needed, even if it won't work for him, either.

Cause if neither one of us can use the gun, he undoubtedly came with something else to use, and I'd really rather the confrontation wasn't allowed to go on long enough for me to find out what that is.

They'll need face masks to keep them from poking their eyes out first.

I have worked with these type of fingerprint readers and have had to replace them on many occasions so my customers can access their buildings or safes. They are just not reliable enough to trust my life with, but as the old saying goes what the customer wants the customer gets. Along with the headaches that go with them. Duke,

A truly smart gun should discern whom is being shot, not just who pulls the trigger.

"A truly smart gun should discern whom is being shot, not just who pulls the trigger."

I have a dozer and a backhoe plus lots of tires to burn. My mistakes are easily taken care of afterwards.

"should discern whom is being shot"

No, that's the responsibility of the shooter.

Sometimes even law enforcement screws up. Sometimes is not correct.

I should say MOST times law enforcement screws up. FBI stats say law enforcement officers hit their intended targets just 27% of the time during fire fights.

If I had not been wearing gloves to keep my hands warm, I might be alive now.
