Ya know, your image represents my first thought about this issue.

In our hubris, we have interrupted (interfered with) evolution... only the strongest fish would have made the trip during this water shortage, leaving behind those less fit. By giving them all a ride, we have now insured that the weaker fish that would have been weeded out by natural selection will also continue to procreate and populate the waters.
