I can't use it to pay my daughter at visit at college 72 miles away. (And get home.) Therefore, it is clearly just an around town bike. And never mind the price tag. But no matter, they are not trying to sell me, they are looking for people with a lot more money than cents.

Actually, you /could/ use it to visit your daughter if you plugged it in while you were there. Sub 80% charge time is around 2 minutes per mile. You're 19 miles shy, so in order to make that round trip you'll have to spend a minimum of 38 minutes with your daughter.

OK, I see your point, scratch that....

This is not an electric bike - it is an electric motorcycle. BIG difference. What many bike riders are hoping for is a 125 mile electric bike for spouses/friends who can't stay with them on decent length rides.

Electric bicycles are :

1. still able to be pedaled - the motor is an assist - not the only power source

2. legal on "rail trails" as they are called, where my wife prefers to ride

3. legal up here in areas off limits to motorized equipment (specifically ATV's, but motorcycles fall into that category) and that covers most of our dirt roads around this area.

4. easy to ride on dirt and gravel - that thing we are talking about would not be happy on gravel

Good points.

I'd think that, ecologically, the electric motorcycles would be allowed on the bike trials, but I imagine you are correct.

Most rail trails are built with Federal funds and they stipulate no motors when the funds are provided. (ever see what an ATV can do to a groomed gravel trail?) Since the E-Bikes are still pedaled, and per government rules, can't exceed 20mph, they are in an overlooked grey area. (5th difference I overlooked - speed limited as mentioned)

I have been on two around here with only local funding that allow the ATV's, and in most cases they are civil and cause no problem. Just takes one idiot to ruin it.

And for only $9.95, they will throw in the optional "Sounds of a Harley" mp3.

Personally I think that if these people want their products to sell they need to get together with the people who do the designs for conventional motorcycles and come up with designs that have positive eye catching attributes.

Given modern hub motor designs and power capacities there is absolutely no reason that a stylish design that is built around the center of the frame where the engine and transmission plus fuel tank originally sat being replaced entirely with batteries could not be manufactured.

Being that a motorcycle only needs around 150 watt hours of energy per mile at highway speeds making a design with a 15 - 20 KWh capacity battery system should not be that difficult and making it nice to look at should be even easier

Given a modest battery power density of .5 watt hours per CC and 300 watt hours per KG of weight making a 20 KWH capacity battery system that weighs under 70KG (common motorcycle engine/transmission and fuel tank combined weight) and around 40,000 CC in volume (similar physical volume as an average motorcycles combined engine and fuel tank area physical volumes) should not be that difficult of numbers to design around.

But that's just my take on things.
