Blog: Does this look like a nonlethal weapon to you?

Posted July 10, 2007 5:03 PM

From Scientific American - Official RSS Feed:

The engineers at Tazer, maker of numerous possibly-lethal "nonlethal" weapons, have added a new item to their arsenal. If it prevents someone from actually getting shot, I'm all for it. (That's assuming that this thing is any safer than what would normally come out of the barrel of a shotgun.) The research I'd like to see done: Does putting "nonlethal" weapons in the hands of law enforcement make them more likely to use them in lieu of, I dunno, tackling people and handcuffing them?

Anyone who has seen the student in a US collage getting hit with a taser about 10 times can answer that one. (I think you can find it on you tube)

It's clear you haven't done much research on the benefits of a person not being put in the position to have to draw a gun in an unknown situation. The correct or not correct decision to draw and fire now isn't life threatening. Unless you don't read every medical case study that says the shock put out by a Tasr is "not" life threatening. Please read your research before making uneducated statements on the internet.

Oh and by the way the next time you see someone in a threatening situation go offer to tackle that guy and subdue him to protect a perfect stranger. You would probobly be the first looking for a gun rather than physically getting involved. Be nice to have a Tasr at that time .....wouldn't it!

Apart from having friends and family in the forces, and having done Judo for 30 years, you mean? Besides, in the UK it's not a big problem. Also in the UK, any police officer that was found to misuse a tazer or similar would be instantly suspended and investigated. In fact, any officer who was seen to be a bully would be on thin ice. Be aware that I am a big critic of our police force, but at least they make an effort to keep standards high. Sometimes.

Nonlethal means may also increase trigger-promiscuity
