I know that this is from Discovery News but the inaccuracies are atrocious.

The article actually claims that a Laser (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation" fires electrons at a piece of gold to produce photons. WTF A laser is a coherent light source that produces photons itself not electrons.

As for the idea that Breit-Wheeler electron-positron production has yet to be observed in a lab, that is silly.

The title is wrong --- it's not turning light into matter, which would violate an number of physics conservation laws. It's turning light into matter and antimatter.
