Students Build an Electric Car With Better Range Than a Tesla

Posted August 05, 2014 8:55 AM

From WIRED:

Australian students built the eVe, a lovely-looking car whose battery pack can be charged from a regular wall outlet or via solar panels on its hood and roof.

Looks like a 700 lb air foil....wouldn't want to drive it in a high wind at 60 mph...I'm guessing it doesn't have a lot of safety features....

Did they run a Tesla S at 60mph over the same route to prove it beat the Tesla?

I think not. I think they used Tesla's "published" mileage and the actual mileage (at an average of 60 mph) may be more or less than published over that same course.

Still, I think the Tesla is the better ride.

I remember in Indianapolis watching IUPUI or maybe it was Purdue ready their Sun Racers for the annual races with a solar powered car. Those would easily meet and exceed the eVe, although the Sun Racers were probably smaller than the eVe.

That was 20 years ago!

It is stunning how fast we forget our past accomplishments. What's next? I'll bet the next time we land a space probe on the Moon (in the next 10 to 20 years) that 50% of the population will think it's a first time event.

Its a science project, not an automobile. Comparing it to a Tesla is ridiculous.

Come talk to me again when it passes the federal safety requirements . . . . . . . has heat, air conditioning, seats four people, carries groceries, luggage . . . . .

I mean, it's good these students are learning through hands-on projects, it's unfortunate the authors of this article were stupid enough to compare apples to cabbage. A round of applause for the students !! A sputtering rasberry for the authors of the Wired article.
