Build Your Martian Dream Home

Posted September 16, 2014 10:04 AM

From BBC News - Science & Environment:

Imagine opening the curtains in the morning and instead of grey skies and rain, looking out at a rust-coloured rocky panorama. Colonising Mars could happen sooner than you think. Elon Musk plans to build a city there. Nasa wants to send people by 2035. Is this how the cities of Mars will be built?

"Colonising Mars could happen sooner than you think."

The challenges are bigger than you think.

Not only do you have to grapple with air, food, water, and heat, but you have a host of other hostile conditions to consider.

Radiation is going to be a problem as Mars has little to offer to protect you atmospherically or magnetically from constant bombardment.

Then there is the dust. You think tracking in sand into your beach home is a problem. Wait until you move in on Mars. The soil is contaminated with poisonous perchlorate, which will have to be removed from your EVA garment before you enter your home.

I guess you will have to leave more than your boots outside the doorstep.

"Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids

In fact it's cold as hell

And there's no-one there to raise them

If you did" - with apologies to Elton John and Bernie Taupin.
