Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

What's That Smell?

Pathfinder Tags: garage repair restoration smell

Over the last 29 years, it's happened more times than I can count. The second I spray degreaser, carburetor cleaner, primer, paint or anything else that has any real or perceived odor, my wife Linda is at the garage door saying, "What's that chemical smell?" I swear it's gotten to the point where she arrives before I pop off the cap, like she already read my mind and knows my intentions.

To her credit, when she makes the comment, I assure her I have proper ventilation and that it will dissipate soon and she is satisfied. These meetings were more infrequent when we lived in a house with no garage and I was doing everything outside, well away from the front door. But now the garage is part of the house (don't mistake this for complaining, as working in an attached garage after nearly 20 years of working outside on the ground is a dream come true), so those fragrant fumes from the aerosol cans reach the wife's nose in record time. As a result, I have to be even more careful than before.

So, what's that smell?

guess some people have more sensitive sniffers than others.

I can tell if some ones is smoking or if they have a cat in the house. but that's not really very special is it?

After running demo derby for about 20 years, I love the smell of hot antifreeze, tire rubber, and exhaust fumes. Ah the memories.

Your response would depend on where the question is in the range of curiosity to complaint, and whether a damn needs to be given or not. That's a surface of unknown shape.

Sometimes the smell plays the same role that the author is talking about in the blog for our significant others'. Hopefully the smell is not a good excuse to complain, but rather evokes a sense of curiousity about what is being worked on. As the author indicates, the smell is related to success. Maybe she is thinking - I smell paint or something- maybe hubby is getting close to completing something and I should go see?

I liken it to cooking when the food begins to smell good. The cooking smells will attract all sorts of looky loos that suddently want to know what the cook is up to - because they want in on the food.

Maybe the smell of auto work attracts looky loos because they want a ride in the completed project result?

Do the job necessary with all the necessary precautions for your own health and safety.

Not worrying about the smell

You should only worry if she stops showing up!

Women have really sensitive smell.

Best thing to do is to tell her first so she's not surprised.

Since it isn't a typical smell she's asking about, it means she is just concerned that nothing is wrong.

Be happy that she is on it right away, rather than taking the smell for granted.

Not all, my girl friend has a poor sense of smell. It even hard for her to see if milk is bad. But her other senses work fine to make up for it, such as taste

first, don your Kevlar.

second, tell her the smell is her upper lip! and duck!

or tell her the smell is fumunda! and duck!

Or you could just ask your local HVAC tech how the garage air is getting introduced to the circulating air from the AC/furnace?

No worries. If she gets to smell it enough times and on high enough concentrations she will loose her smell sensitivity too. Problem solved. S.M.

Or get your hands on the old version of nasal spray cold remedy that contained zinc, and convince her to take a large dose. That should do it, no harm other than possible permanent loss of sense of smell. Actually, do not try this at home. It has already been done, and wife stopped complaining about my windage, but does complain a great deal about my lack of responsiveness to here wants, needs, whims, projects, etc.

A lot of aerosol sprays have aromatics added, probably to mask some of the more unpleasant odors that naturally occur.
