Pyramids Research: On Verge of Major Discovery?

Posted December 29, 2015 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

The Scan Pyramids project - launched in October - attempts extracting new information from Egypt's 4,500 year-old pyramids using non-destructive infrared thermography, cosmic particle detectors, and photogrammetry. Already, thermal scans of the Khufu pyramid show a "thermal anomaly" indicating a possible void or unknown internal structure. Explanations for the perplexing results may come after researchers finish parsing the volumes of data acquired so far. The project now moves to a drone-powered aerial photogrammetry phase aimed at creating extremely precise 3D models of the pyramids and surrounding terrain. View a video overview of the Scan Pyramids project.
