Inductive Switch Challenges Capacitive, Magnetic, Electro-mechanical Rivals

Electro-mechanical, capacitive, and magnetic sensing techniques may come to mind for detecting a door closure or opening, a button press, or linear or rotary motion, but one chip-maker hopes you'll start thinking inductively. The company's new switching integrated circuit (IC) detects the presence or absence of conductive material using a simple coil drawn on a printed circuit board (PCB), providing a contactless, magnet-free switching solution. The chip's differential sensing technique maintains a stable switching threshold across variations in temperature and humidity.

That's fine - TI has invented it, but who will actually be using this chip in a "real world" adaptation? That is what I would like to know. Sounds like a detector just made for the sanitary tank and process skid market. Lid open sensor. Valve open sensor.
