Office Printers 'Are Health Risk'

Posted July 31, 2007 9:06 AM

From BBC News | Technology | World Edition:

The humble office printer can damage lungs in much the same way as smoke particles from cigarettes, according to a team of Australian scientists. An investigation of a range of models showed that almost a third emit potentially dangerous levels of toner into the air. The Queensland University of Technology scientists have called on ministers to regulate these kinds of emissions. They say some printers should come with a health warning. The researchers carried out tests on more than 60 machines. Almost one-third were found to emit ultra-tiny particles of toner-like material, so small that they can infiltrate the lungs and cause a range of health problems from respiratory irritation to more chronic illnesses. Conducted in an open-plan office, the test revealed that particle levels increased five-fold during working hours, a rise blamed on printer use.

It has been common knowledge in the printer field that printers have become more health friendly since their widespread inception with the HP Series I laser printer. At that time the HP Series I, then 2, 3 had corona's that gave off Ozone. They had an Ozone filter, but nobody ever changed the silly things and thus many in closed office areas become ill from the effects. The printer industry switched to PCR's with the HP Series 4. Unfortunately, this did not do much for the much smaller particle toner that was also introduced. Yes, they let off small particles, it may take years to be effected. Just like a smoker, it will be years before the true nature of the problem is realized. 20 years in an office may give you lungs that look like you worked in a coal mine?

It should read "Office LASER Printers" are a health risk......!

They always were! Nothing new here and they mostly also emit Ozone too......which is why I use expensive ink-jet technology only.....

All Laser printers should have an air scrubbing facility around them.......

I was a laser Printer Specialist from 1986 for a few years........!
