Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Quick Question: Is Filming Yourself Hooning on Public Roads Okay?

Posted February 08, 2016 10:30 AM by dstrohl
Pathfinder Tags: filming Movies traffic laws

So the last week or so, the autoblogosphere - not to mention the citizens of San Diego - have worked themselves into an uproar over the video from which the still above was taken. It features some bro tearing around San Diego sans permits in his jacked-up off-road buggy in an attempt to get his sponsors some attention.

Coincidentally, we had just run the famous/infamous chase scene from The French Connection in our Hemmings Sunday Cinema the weekend before the above-mentioned video started to gain traction. Both featured permit-less driving on public streets, property damage, and a high chance of putting unsuspecting people just walking down the road in danger. Yet one's been hailed as a gutsy move by an up-and-coming director (and played a part in an Oscar win), while the other's been almost universally condemned.

Why have the reactions been so different?

With a few cameramen and some unseen spotters with radios a lot of dangerous looking pubic activities can be carried out with far more control and safety than what will appear on the end cut of the video we get to see.

Obviously given the multiple camera views of so many scenes there was a lot of preplanning and a fair number of unseen crew members working together to make things look the way they did which likely also mean there was a lot more concern for real life public safety involved than what appears.

Agreed, in cases such as these illegal does not necessarily mean unsafe.

Of course there is a grey area as well, but I would err on the side that safety was less of a concern for people that perform these stunts unless proven otherwise as it is to easy now days for someone to gain access to a camera phone, a vehicle, an acquaintance or two and a 6 pack and then post on line.

Hooning? I think they cite that as reckless driving on the ticket....and speeding....and enough violations to suspend your license, and tow in your vehicle for safe keeping, and provide room and board at the local boys club...

Meh.. Around here there are times where we have to drive like that just to avoid the potholes and even then becoming airborne is unavoidable.

Yeah, how did the tail end of Eric Idle's(1) "Universe Song"go again?

o/~ There must be intelligent life out in the universe, 'cuz there's bugger-all down here on Earth. o/~

Notes:

  1. I know it was a Python, and to the best of my recollection, it was Eric Idle who sang with the high, clear, gentle tones for that song.

Not surprising. We have TV to blame for this. What did a whole generation, now in their 30's, grow up watching on TV? The Dukes of Hazard, Knight Rider, and The A Team. Stretch out the age group to early 40's and you have Starsky and Hutch and The Rockford Files. What was the draw of these shows - wild stunts, particularly car stunts. Got to live out your child hood dreams, you know.

Actually, I think most of this is the internet.

Everyone has their shot at viral fame now.

However, there are so many people competing for that 5-minute slot that it's driven people to higher and higher degrees of absurdity.

The old saying, "I've seen everything now!" has been proven false. We haven't seen the end of it.

Yeah - I was just mocking an analysis from years ago concerning dangerous and destructive antics. My generation was such a rebellious group because of TV - in particular, the Howdy Doody Show supposedly taught us not to trust anyone over 30. Yeah, that and all the BS from the politicians of the day. Guess that hasn't changed a bit.

New words keep being introduced into the king's English. At 81, I can't keep up, nor do I want to. What the hell is "hooning"? I love my language just the way it is. Why do minorities try to change it to suit themselves? Language is what separates the educated from street brawlers and hooligans.

The shaking photography makes this unwatchable, if it were worth watching in the first place.

This sort of customisation is rather out of hand, but given the large population base it isn't that much of a surprise there are a few really over the top examples that don't really accomplish much of anything except 'LOOK AT MY RIIIIIIMMMMMMMS'.
