Portable Bio-power Gets Going with Compact Gasifier

Posted February 12, 2016 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

The portable biomass refinery and power generator profiled in IHS Engineering360 is the product of eight years of R&D and is now providing on-demand power for users in more than 30 nations. The Power Pallet is characterized as a "personal waste-to-energy" system that yields AC power and heat from walnut shells, corn cobs, wood chips, and other bio-feedstock. The economics compare favorably with off-grid diesel and solar - particularly in developing areas - as the 800 kg, 15-18 kW capacity unit consumes 1.2 kg/kWh at a cost of $1.40 USD/W. A 150 kW system housed in a shipping container is under development by California-based ALL Power Labs.

Over the years everybody has struggled with pyrolysis (Union Carbide, Monsanto, Batelle, etc.) of mixed organic wastes. It always ended up being a mess of incompatible char and fouling of liquids, which were also very corrosive. As I recall various versions of up-flow mixed bed pH moderating (e. g., limestone) reactors gave the best results; these gadgets were not appliances. Direct combustion for combined heat and power (CHP) always seemed to be the most dependable and durable waste to energy technology, again, not being appliances.

One time I was challenged to come with some environmental solutions for magnetic media being disposed of by Fuji USA. The game plan I had in mind incorporated a molten sodium carbonate bath to catch the nasty PVC type plastics included. I think they scrapped the idea and did something else (like fill up a giant warehouse).
