Stay Clean When Going Green

Posted August 01, 2007 8:35 AM by Steve Melito

The push toward alternative fuels in general, and ethanol in particular, is lauded as the right route to automotive greenhouse emissions reduction and energy independence. Ethanol developers must be familiar with air permit requirements and attendant abatement tools so that production does not offset the beneficial impact of green fuels. Volatile organic compound, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and hazardous air pollutant emissions from distiller's grain dryers in ethanol plants are reduced with regenerative thermal oxidizers or direct-fired thermal oxidizer/waste heat boilers, both specified in this Pollution Engineering feature. What are the potential ramifications of pollution controls for bio-based fuel output?

While it is perfectly possible to extract ethanol from bakery emissions and use it as a fuel, either for the bakery or for the delivery van, Britain's tax system renders the prospect uneconomic.

While I agree with the cleaning up of vehicle emmisions to combine this with a threat of global extinction, if it doesn't happen, is wrong. If you check the record as most competent HVAC engineers do when designing airconditioning systems; that have to have a life similar to the building they are designed for, as a bench mark, usually 25 years. You will realise that global warming is correct but is happening in large part from the natural effects of Sun activity and not human activity. Cleaning our act up at what cost? The real cost is the loss of oppurtunity to put right some of the more pressing problems, money only goes so far.

What are some of the more pressing problems that you feel would be most important?

One of the more lunitic ones, is that in the UK, the constant belief that more and more green belt, countryside, must give way to cheap housing so that all first-time buyers and the less privilaged can rise to owning their own home. The real problem is that more and more people own far more than one home. We have people lauded in the media who buy domestic housing by the street and by the 10's of houses thus taking the new builds off the market often before they are even in the ground. Checking that would give a huge plus to the environment. I do not see a lobby in this area.

So, you feel that the most pressing problem to which we need to apply our moneys, is stopping people from buying HOUSES? .....really?

you gotta be kiddin'.

Well I guess, in my effort to support your wise and crucial information and advise, I'll be giving my home (or homes) away to homeless people so that it will save my planet...

hold your breath.

Anybody else have any asinine drivel to slap all over the web that could be as helpful?

No. If all the multiple housing held by companies or individuals was released to the market the polution generated by the building industry would be diminished from vehicle, cement & concrete manufacture, as well all the other production. The creaping loss of countryside would drop and maybe we would find that the cost of buying a house would also go down?

I do believe we need to work on improving emissions. however I do not believe Ethanol is the answer. It takes 1 1/3 gallon of Ethanol to equal 1 gallon of gasoline in terms of energy released. Which pollutant is worse - 1 1/3 gallon of Ethanol or 1 gallon of gasoline? Pollutants produced in a one to one ratio of Ethanol vs. Gas is not realistic. Additonally, what are the other pollutants that Ethanol produces that Gasoline does not? Example: Ethanol is less harmful to the Ozone layer, but produces a carcinogic more harmful to humans and animals when burned. That being said, Ethanol produces less Carbon Monoxide than Gas, but pollutants should not be based solely on one output. If Ethanol is the answer then why is it Govt. subsidized and yet still costs more than Gasoline? What happens when the Govt. stops subsidizing? Finally, Ethanol is mainly made from corn in the U.S. I have a difficult time accepting the making of fuel out of a food source. There is more, but I have said enough.

Okay ! ethanol is an viable alternative to gasoline as imediate replacement fuel for established technologies like IC engines , but they are not pollution free and cannot? supply demand for shear vehicles poppulation , what do eat after that , sure food prices will rise to over pass the fuel demand , i cannot imagine half the world starving for biofuel drinkers , we need better alternative and think beyond these established technologies to meet energy demands...thank you
