A Gentle Reminder about Community Participation

Posted March 23, 2016 11:59 AM by SavvyExacta

CR4 is a great place because it's made up of people from diverse backgrounds, both in terms of subject matter and location. This wide range of experience and opinions definitely makes for great discussion and support when tackling challenges.

But this diversity can cause people to bump heads. Disagreement is natural! And while there is nothing wrong with differing points of view, we ask (actually, we require) that you share yours respectfully. There is no need to belittle, berate, or harass your fellow community members.

This goes for EVERYONE. There have been some complaints recently. I'm not singling anyone out, and this is a general reminder for ALL. If you have specific concerns, please contact me privately. This post is not a place for airing grievances, and such comments will be deleted.

Don't like what someone has to say? Share your own opinion in a courteous manner. Can't do that? Do what young kids are taught - ignore the post. If it's dangerous, inflammatory, or otherwise against the CR4 rules, please report it to the moderation team.

The moderation team will be keeping a closer eye on things, but please remember, all of us are part time volunteers here at CR4. We have other demands on our time and would really rather not spend our days policing childish behavior.

With that, please continue to make CR4 the unique resource that it is. And let the moderators go back to worrying about spam.

Well spoken, admirable intent, best wishes and hope you are successful, but it is a lot like trying to sweep back the sea with a broom.

A very keen, thoughtful observation of the administrator! Keep it up!

Another thing that is worth pointing out is the lack of the written-word's ability (especially if it is not written in your primary language and/or is improperly punctuated) to convey: sarcasm, dry humor, or a friendly poke in jest.

And, since 'offense' is often times more perception than intention - before 'flying off the handle' (note that idioms are often misunderstood between cultures as well) make a clarifying inquiry whilst providing the benefit of the doubt, such as: "I'm sure you weren't trying to be a jerk, so maybe I just misunderstood what you meant?"

I can't tell you how many times I've seen what was intended to be a bit of sarcastic dry humor turn into volleys of invective being hurled across international boundaries. Thank goodness we don't have access to Launch Codes.
