Jupiter Struck By Asteroid...Or Something

Posted March 31, 2016 8:39 AM by Bayes

Amateur astronomers have captured Jupiter being impacted by somthing, most likely an asteroid or a comet. A bright flash can be seen as the impact occurs. Here is an article about it that has a video. As a side note, it's always great to see the important impact amateur astronomers have on the field of astronomy.

Good job it's predominantly Jupiter, then.

I'm sure Jupiter has 'saved' us on more than a few occasions.

I wonder if this flash might actually be from a Jovian spacecraft escaping the atmosphere?

Jupiter escape velocity: 59.5 km/sec

Energy per kg: E=.5mv2 = 1.77 x 109 watt sec (per kg) = 1.77 Gigawatt for 1 second

Anything of any size is going to light up pretty good!

1.77 Gigawatts...isn't that what Doc Brown needed for his DeLorean time machine? I'm starting to see a pattern here...
