Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Open Diff: Are Resurrected Model Names a Good Thing?

Pathfinder Tags: Bronco Ford model reboot

News broke earlier this month that two Ford models no longer sold in North America will be returning in the coming years. One is the Ford Ranger, a compact (or midsize, depending upon perspective) pickup last offered here during the 2012 model year, while the other is the Ford Bronco, which went out of production in 1996.

Ford wasted no time in introducing a replacement for the Ranger in markets outside of North America, with the latest Ranger model (designed by Ford Australia) entering production in 2011. Officially, declining demand led to its cancellation on these shores, but the real reason was financial: it costs nearly as much to build a compact pickup as it does to build a full-size, which makes the larger (and more expensive) trucks far more profitable.

Car model reboots are now as common as superhero movie reboots, but are they as popular?

If the manufacturer can make a 're-boot' that has clear visual lineage to the legacy model, with features capturing the essence of what made the legacy model so popular, then yes. The Bronco concept model shown in the attached article is an absolute abomination. Looks twice as bad as a pimped out HMMWV.

That's the '04 Bronco concept. Here is the 2020 Ford Bronco.

But I would have to agree. I think Mopar has done good job with their legacy lines, overall.

Mopar? What's Mopar got to do with it?

It will be just right for OJ Simpson to drive away when he gets out of prison.

That kind of reminds me of the old IHC Scout. Now that would be a vehicle worth resurrecting.

I don't really think it's what it looks like that's so important, really, though admittedly that does have a huge impact. The original Bronco was a cutting edge 4x4, and I think that what it going to sell this new SUV is it's off-road/bad road prowess.

Some of the acceptance will depend on the age of the potential purchaser, as both models grew fat and ugly in their old age. The Baby Boomer gen will expect a small version of each, as they were at original production, while the Gen X will probably remember the old and fat version. Millenials will say what is a Ranger / Bronco??? Personally, I had a late production of the Ranger and was unhappy with the size of it, as it might as well have been a F150. Didn't even consider a late production Bronco as it was too large for my preferences. As you may guess - Baby Boomer, with the kids out the door years ago. Give me the small version, please.

The original Bronco was a great off road vehicle, perhaps the best ever. I took mine through some tough country and it never failed to get me back. Add a winch and it nearly becomes a go-anywhere vehicle. Ford should resurrect it with a little modern style but maintaining the original toughness, capability and durability. That is a retro worth going forward with.

What is important here is the vehicle's capabilities, it's durability and it's longevity. I have a 1996 Toyota 4Runner out in my driveway with 244 thousand miles on it, that can claw it's way through almost anything, be it a foot of snow or a 30 degree backwoods trail. There are any number of trucks and SUVs with similar chops. What is going to persuade me to spend my money on a Ford Bronco or Ranger, over a Toyota 4Runner or Tacoma? A Nissan or Range Rover?

To win in this market segment, these new Fords are going to have to have serious off-road/bad road chops, they are going to have to be bullet-proof, they are going to have to be all but immortal, and they are going to have to be reasonably priced.
