Implantable Cardiac Sensor Gets Patented

Posted August 09, 2007 9:30 AM by Sharkles

The U.S. Patent Office has granted a patent associated with the design and manufacture of a wireless, batteryless, implantable sensor for the non-invasive monitoring of pressure in a cardiac conduit. The technology enables physicians to continuously monitor a heart patient's cardiac conduit pressure and blood flow rate with great accuracy.

This is a really interesting post! As someone with a long family history of heart problems, its reassuring to hear that new technologies are currently being created and put to good use.

I wonder what doctors think of this new implantable sensor? Although I am sure they are excited about its benefit to their patients, the article mentions that the device will decrease the number of hospital and clinic visits (good for the patient, bad for the doctor fiscally), and then casually admits the INCREASE in overall timeliness of treatement (bad for the patient, and good for the drug companies who supply cardiac medications such as Lipitor, Plavix, etc.).

It makes me wonder who owns this ISSYS company doing all the research. Hopefully the patient's best interest is at "heart".

The article doesn't tell us anything about it!

Implantable and non invasive aren't these mutually exclusive?
