Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Preservation Commission Declares Route 66 “endangered”

Citing the economic impact that Route 66 has had and continues to have on small to mid-size communities, Landmarks Illinois earlier this month declared the road one of its Most Endangered Historic Places, the first time the preservation commission has included a road on that list.

"We did this both out of a sense of community pride in Route 66 and because of the positive economic impact Route 66 has," said Frank Butterfield, Landmarks Illinois's Springfield field office director. The list, which Landmarks Illinois has published every year since 1995, typically features historic buildings "threatened by deterioration, lack of maintenance, insufficient funds, or inappropriate development."

However, according to Butterfield, Landmarks Illinois has in recent years included other historic sites, including bridges, monuments, and - with the Route 66 designation - roads.

While the road itself doesn't necessarily face an existential risk, the communities along the road do. This could be the lifeline that keeps these areas in business and not a historical footnote.

I am sure the part of Route 66 that goes through north Amarillo (the part that is not I-40), could use a face-lift by getting rid of some lot lizzards, rat-hole motels, and trashy so-called businesses, and installing more touristy places that are family oriented.

Or, just leave it be, and let the bikers enforce it.

They'll probably make it a National Park...

I drove on part of route 66 last winter while in Arizona and went to Oatman for a day.

Oatman Arizona

I have to say that although it has a historical significance and appeal to it the road itself where we were barely passes for a marginally maintained country road now.

Without a major modernization and update to make it into something of a more modern roadway I can't see anyone wanting to travel any part of it that is representing the locations the article relates to.

Very few want to travel on a old rough low speed poorly maintained near dirt road for hours on end to get to someplace that has near nothing to offer once you get there but the same tedious rough drive to get away. Hence the reason they are endangered. Nobody want to go there for a reason.

Back in its day when compared to little wagon trials it replaced it was the equivalent of our modern 4 - 6 lane interstate highways but today when compared to our modern interstates it's barely the equivalent of one of those old wagon trails it once stood over.

The whole concept of road tripping is defunct, roadside attractions, in the age of Disney and six flags and ocean world and Vegas, and other destination attractions and events, are lame....and vehicle travel as a vacation, no I don't think so....it's cheaper and faster to fly, although you do risk being dragged off the plane and beaten, it's still better.....Family road trips were once an adventure, now they are 20 kinds of torture with death and destruction lurking in the shadows....

So these days, the roadside attraction signage has been replaced with "serial killer drop-off zone", or "body dump", or "abduction center ahead"???

WTF over?

".Family road trips were once an adventure, now they are 20 kinds of torture with death and destruction lurking in the shadows...."

They have always been that way. Growing up my family took a ~ 2 week driving vacation around some part of the US every summer just before school started.

Sure we got to see some neat things but mostly was just 2 weeks out of a year to remind us why appreciate being more than an arm's length from everyone else the rest of the year.

Dad had everything planned down to within 10 minutes per day regardelss what was going on and it never factored in that there may be road construction, heavy traffic , or wrong turns in a ~3000+ mile road trip.

Mom couldn't read a road map to save our lives.

My brother spent more of his time concocting new ways to act like a bigger retard than he did the day before than acting like a normal responsible person being by some idiotic logic he figured the stupider he acted the dumber it made me look.

I would have preferred to just put my headphones on and stare out the window and imagine I was anywhere but in that vehicle.

And that was the good parts of the trips.

Gotta love it when a plan and a family comes together on vacation.

On the lighter side, at least not of you ended up being on someone else's menu during the road trip. Hopefully, you camped out, rather than sleeping in nasty motels.

That stuff is nowhere near the level of concern the media works it up to be. Nor of the level of reality that certain people make it out to be in order to justify not traveling and what not.
