What Is It?

What Is It? is a place for engineers to test their knowledge (and sense of humor). Each week (or month, or...) the CR4 team will post an unidentified picture of an object, tool, animal, something. We're looking for your best (or funniest) guesses at what it might be in the comments.

Yes, we take [appropriate] submissions. Send them to cr4admin@ieeeglobalspec.com.

Pathfinder Tags: Tools what is it

Sorry for the long layoff CR4ers. Let's get back into the groove.

First up is this tool. Yeah, maybe you can cheat with a reverse image search, but what is the fun in that?

Answer to be posted or confirmed November 9.

I would never have guessed that! The blackened surface of the wooden handle on the cupped side, together with the overall black color of the metal end made me suspect that a blowtorch aimed at the cup was used to heat it... But for what purpose, I had no idea, other than some form of cooking tool.

I had to look up that patent number, and it is indeed authentic! GA!

The cup is to hold tacks, but I'm betting that someone used the tool for some totally different purpose, which involved heating it.

Impressive!!! GA to you!

My guess was something to do with casting balls, then using the other side to make patterns before the item cooled. The burn mark on the handle and the cast iron made me think that it was for pouring molten metal in the cup.

This is an early tool used for preparing steak tidbits....you have a tenderizer on one side and a small frying pan on the other...the semi-circle end extension is for pinning the head of the steak, er snake, that that tries to steal your tidbits...

My guess would be a farrier's tool. The cup holds the nails for the horseshoe after having cleaned the muck out from around the frog with the spikes on the bottom and the curved end.

Used to melt lead to pour into and seal sewer drain line joints. Pointed end used to stuff "oakum" into the joint before melting and pouring lead.

I thought about something like that, but I would expect it to have a pouring spout.

It's a blueing cup for blueing steel bolts and fittings. The spikes on the one side insulate the cup from the table/floor of the kiln and the spiked front end keeps it from touching the back of the kiln. Brass shavings go into the cup along with the polished steel parts to be blued. They are inserted into the kiln or on top of the coals and heated until the steel begins to blue and then it is pulled out and allowed to cool.

Probably for watch and clock making.

A good indication that you want no part of hazing rituals.

Carpet stretcher. Speculating I would say that the bowl is for holding tacks, the nodules on the bottom used to grasp the carpet, and the horns on the end allowing the carpet layer to insert a tack to hold the carpet in place?
