What Is It? Blog

What Is It?

What Is It? is a place for engineers to test their knowledge (and sense of humor). Each week (or month, or...) the CR4 team will post an unidentified picture of an object, tool, animal, something. We're looking for your best (or funniest) guesses at what it might be in the comments.

Yes, we take [appropriate] submissions. Send them to cr4admin@ieeeglobalspec.com.

You may be late to the party. The first picture lacks the atmospheric distortion that yours has. :-)

Well done!

We had some very severe fires simultaneously in the Malibu and Ahmanson Ranch areas here in November 2007.

This is what the sun looked like mid afternoon from a mountain ridge in Thousand Oaks California. The whole viewable sky was similar to that in this picture, mostly dull red.

Good guesses.

Nope that when you look right through the hollow when you want to see the shine.

But its simply not there.

The problem is they do not stand above you and if they bend over they will never be able to shine.

Could be one of many things given we don't know the scale, what's in the rest of the cropped photo or what filtering was used in the photo.

A single eye of a T-800 Terminator walking in dense fog in the new (yet to open)Terminator movie.

Is this at least in the current news to give us a chance?

I heard that obfuscation by the use of an undefined pronoun is frequently the technique of the merely baffled and the "aye dee ten tea" alike.

Sunrise in Philadelphia, Pa. near the refineries, circa July 1969. It looked quite a bit like this prior to all the air pollution enforcement.
