What Is It? Blog

What Is It?

What Is It? is a place for engineers to test their knowledge (and sense of humor). Each week (or month, or...) the CR4 team will post an unidentified picture of an object, tool, animal, something. We're looking for your best (or funniest) guesses at what it might be in the comments.

Yes, we take [appropriate] submissions. Send them to cr4admin@ieeeglobalspec.com.

So why does a bird that's big enough to pick up an elephant need to look behind itself?

Is there a giant godzilla cat nearby?

There is a 'Rock Eagle' (that's what it's called) near Eatonton, GA. From tip to tip it's about 100 feet x 120 feet. It's estimated to be 1000 to 3000 years old.

Google images photo

There is a similar formation about 13 miles away called the 'Rock Hawk'. The 'rock hawk' is in much poorer condition.

My guess is that the bird's beak is facing the sunrise for the Summer Solstice. An ancient people would have placed the stones (in the shape of an eagle) as a directional indicator to the rising sun for ritual or calendrical purposes. Perhaps it was to aid them in determining the proper time to plant crops.

I'm inclined to think it's a trail marker - a pretty elaborate trail marker.

Distinctive, if that's what it is intended for.

Could be a picture of a bow and arrow, with a really heavy arrow. The bow and arrow to end all wars, because it is just too heavy to carry to a war.

It could be a portrait of a man with a mustache and really heavy eyebrows.

It could be a formation of rocks designed to prevent rain water from washing out the trail.

A picture of a flying fish? A swallow? A swift?

IF this is one Superstition Mountain, then it is approximately 2 markers away from the Lost Dutchman Gold Mine. (not)

It is a Boy Scout trail marker. Only Eagle Scouts allowed past this point. Or it is Boy Scout language for "if you think you can fly, don't pay attention to the trail from this point onward."

It is the burial plot of the Bird Man of Alcatraz...

Early evolution of birds proved to be a complete failure as evidenced by the rock-like bone structure, with complete development of osteo-arthritis in the joints.

If you hold a mirror up to the left side , at just the right angle, it looks like the hood ornament from a 56 Chevy.

It is a Chumash Indian sculpture, hidden on a ridge in the Santa Monica mountains in La County California. It is aimed towards Catalina island about 20 miles away. I found it about 10 years ago while cross country hiking up from the ocean and along the ridge line.

Brought local Indians and Archaeologist up to verify its authenticity. They estimate it has been there over 300 or more years.

Thanks Dan,

What's the scale? I imagine that the one large rock in the body and possibly the one in the left wing were already in place, and, that the others could all be lifted by one or maybe two people.

The eagle is about 6 feet long by about 6 feet wingspan.

I stumbled upon it while cross counting on the ridge line. It was in a small clearing surround by high brush on 3 side.

Thanks for your interest.

A mystery!

What compels man to create these images? From before recorded history, down through time, man has left his concept of the world around him.

Like some smooth shoreline boulder somewhere on a Minnesota lake, there! on that rock, a long cylindrical stone with two small round stones perched above it. What does it mean??????

Pirates have booty hidden somewhere. This could be the treasure map to the Nordic Pirate Norsemen Gold brought here after plundering, etc.
