School uniforms to track kids using GPS

Posted August 23, 2007 2:33 PM

From Newlaunches.com:

Trutex a school uniform maker based in Lancashire, UK is considering adding satellite tracking devices to its clothing range so parents will know where their children are. The move comes after Bladerunner another English clothing company revealed it was selling stab-proof t-shirts, hooded tops and school blazers to parents worried about their children being attacked. It seems unlikely that a teenager would willingly wear a GPS-laced outfit as only half of all pupils aged 12 and under said they would not mind wearing the uniforms. The company has not disclosed pricing or release date but with 59 per cent of the parents interested in the uniforms with satellite tracking systems it is not long before. Trutex (UK)

So...why do we want to do this?

Interesting concept, and a legal nightmare: delegate parental responsibility to the designers and operators of an electronic system! The only winners will be the legal profession...

More fundamentally, do we really trust our children so little? This isn't about knowing were they are for there own safety, this is about checking up on them. What happened to teaching them about responsibility by giving them responsibility? To me, this is just another aspect of the big brother mentality taking over. Of course, the kids who probably can't be trusted will be the ones who's parents don't worry or care what they are doing, and so wont bother with this. It's like the old gun and knife amnesty's the police keep having, of course all the criminals will hand over the tools of their trade!

Quite. All relationships are built on trust.

In countries where the government has legislated how you should now raise your children. Why not????? Let's completely abdicate our responsibilities as parents and let someone else look after them.
