In 1925, the company we today know as Caterpillar was formed by the merger of Holt Manufacturing and the C.L. Best Tractor Company. Two years later, the firm’s first clean-sheet design, the Caterpillar Model Twenty, was launched, making it a cornerstone of the firm’s identity.
In 2013, Caterpillar opened the Doug Oberhelman Caterpillar Visitors Center at its Peoria, Illinois, headquarters, and a Model Twenty was sought for display in the Heritage Gallery. Ultimately, a 1928 Model Twenty with the serial number L1137 was selected, though it would ultimately take two derelict crawlers to make one complete tractor.
