Not The First Flying Boat, But Almost Certainly The Coolest

Posted September 07, 2007 5:09 PM

From The Uber-Review:

We've all seen airplanes that can land on water, but the Brio Flying Boat is a water vehicle first and a flying menace second. Made from a what looks to be a motorized raft, the Brio takes off like a airplane on the water and flies like a hand glider. The boat won't come cheap, but it's sure to be a heck of a ride. Check out the video after the jump. Price: $14,931 (R$29,149 Brazil Reais)

$14,931 for anything that flies is a great deal! Ordinary Jet Ski's (PWC's) can be over $10,000 now.

The video seemed to be avoiding landings, and I was thinking that perhaps there was a nerve-wracking pitch forward on touchdown -- but it appears not -- the one landing shown went very smoothly. In the US, this might be in a grey area reg wise. With it clearly flying well out of ground effect, it would be considered subject to FAA regs, but it looks too heavy to be an ultralight.

The camera lens was pretty long, so distances would be compressed, but it made me squirm every time it looked close to people and jet skiers.

Very cool, in any case.
