Safety audit is a systematic procedure to evaluate potential hazards, and to recommend measures to minimise / prevent hazards. This is a loss prevention programme- property/production loss, loss of life/injuries to personnel /animals.Electrical safety audit is specific on hazards of electrical origin. Observations can be classified into 5 major areas: i)Design features ii)Maintenance aspects iii)Training needs iv) Facilities & Procedures v) Management Commitment. Recommendations as identified in the audit shall be implemented on a time bound programme and shall be closely monitored for timely completion.

I feel that a very few industries and commercial sectors are interested in getting electrical safety audit conducted for them. They are rather interested in getting Energy Audit conducted because it results in money saving when properly implemented.

And in this process they overlook the fact that the results energy audit could be deceptive without electrical audit.

As a first step towards addressing issues pertaining to energy management in plant, it is atmost necessary first to carry out Electrical System audit to reveal the hidden non conformities in respect of supply and utilization of electric supply. And conduct electrical energy audits.

This is very important in knowing whether plant electrical system is based on a sound foundation in terms of safety of equipment and personal, adequacy of protection system commensurate with the fault levels etc. This is a prerequisite of Energy Audit.

Dr. Salsinghikar,

I agree with your valued point, But todays economy pushes somebody to look at saving cost.

Is there any standard Safety, and/or Energy mesurement audit report template available for reference.

This would help few of us who are interested but are ignorant on what needs to reviewed in detail.

Though I agree the best way is to get it reviewed by competant engineer, but a manager need to know what should be checked/reviewed and what should be expected gives upper hand in promoting this both audits....

Yeshwanth Hegde K.

Yes, there is a standard manner in which in elec. safety audits can be conducted and that too as per the Indian statutory provisions under IE rules. I am regularly practicing it to the full satisfaction of my clients.

I do not deny your view that today's economy pushes somebody to look at saving cost. But I feel that that efforts and money spent on directly conducting energy Audits without electrical audit should not get wasted for the reasons explained by me.
