Posted October 08, 2007 10:49 AM

From LiveScience.com:

LiveScience asked several scientists from various fields what they thought were the greatest mysteries today, and then we added a few that were on our minds, too. The resulting articles ran during August 2007.

Re: The Greatest Mysteries in Science

Ok, greatest mysteries explained, here we go.......

What Makes a Scientist? - A snazzy white lab coat (like the one I am wearing).

How Does the Brain Work? - Slowly in the mornings until that first cup of tea. It does have a tendency to wander, which is quite surprising considering it has no legs. Hey, I wonder what life would be like if it did.

How Many Species Exist on Earth? - Quite a few. The more disturbing question is how many species are we wiping out each year (the answer is a hell of a lot, and I am not just talking about the insect world).

Does Alien Life Exist? - The Websters dictionary defines "Alien" as
1: belonging or relating to another person, place, or thing : STRANGE b : relating, belonging, or owing allegiance to another country or government : FOREIGN c : EXOTIC 1

and

2 : differing in nature or character typically to the point of incompatibility.

So, yes Aliens exist. Everyone except me is an alien.

Who Are You? - I am me! Who are you?

What Causes Mass Extinctions? - Mass stupidity (with a little chance thrown in).

How Did Human Culture Evolve? - Too quickly for its own good .

What Causes Gravity? - Gravity doesn't exist, the earth is expanding in size by 9.81m/s. That is why when you jump up you eventually meet the ground (it is coming towards you, not the other way around).

How Did the Universe Begin? - I think a big bang was involved (or at least some sort of celebration). I mean really, wouldn't you celebrate, its not like the universe comes into existence every day you know!

Why Do We Desire Things? - Because of one simple word...... "Marketing"

What Drives Evolution? - <stands to attention> THE WANT AND DESIRE TO BE THE BEST OF THE BEST, SIR!

What Happens Inside an Earthquake? - Same thing that happens in the bedroom, a lot of noise, movement and friction.

Where is the Rest of the Universe? - Its there somewhere. Have you looked down the back of the couch?

Is There a Theory of Everything? - Yes, but it proves nothing.

How Did Life Arise on Earth? - From the ground up!

All clear now boys and girls (I would finish with an emoticon but I think I used them all up).

Re: The Greatest Mysteries in Science

I have always spoken to my now 4 yr old son in real terms. If he sks about clouds we talk about water vapor. If he asks bout the color of grass we talk about chloroiphyl, floating yields bouyancy etc.

As a result, oftentimes our conversations start with him saying "..well actually..."

One time, just to see how stubborn he really was, I allowed a discussion to go on and on and on and on.

I am a grown man. He is a child. I know the sky was blue that day. But about 40 minutes into our discussion I was ready to agree that it was, in fact, and contrary to what I knew to be true, yellow.

He is his Daddy's son!

I kept my 3 1/2 year old son going for 2 hours with nothing but "hmmm's" and "is that so?" He will talk on forever about anything whether or not someone is listening!

We have similar talks. The big problem is when I'm running the lathe or mill and he just has to be involved. How does one piece of metal cut another? Isn't all metal hard? (that one got him a piece of aluminum foil to explore). It makes me wish I had more wood working tools, he's already getting tired of legos.

So Daddy got it right - your son was there and listening. Every bit of distilled knowledge passing down to him. Keep it fun, and keep 'em interested I say . Kudos ! For my own part, I worship every time they try the unexpected. Wow, did I pull some bads when I was a kid - but I was luck enough to have someone show me the positive lessons to learn. Keep 'em safe and let them explore.

I seen that in a thread somewhere.

Why does everything come around in circles. I reckon that any two random words could somehow be connected by trivia.

I couldn't believe when i found that Avatar I am always taking things apart to see how they work. Almost always they go back together the same or better you would have thought I would learn better as a kid.

After I read the "original" message, it was about the greatest mystery of science. How to create non polluting, renewable energy?

I can tell you that! I saw it!

They either throw you in a hole and cover you with dirt or sometimes they put you in an oven. Sometimes, they get creative, and do some combination of the above. It's all very messy. It's good your dead, because you'd be embarrassed if you weren't.

Even in the sky burial thing, they first shake 'n bake you!

By the way, you're now dreaming. Now you're awake. Whoops, you're dreaming again. Still dreaming. Still dreaming. Now you're dreaming you're awake. Now you're awake, but you think you're dreaming. Good! Now go make a ham sandwich for me. You're still dreaming.

Wiki didn't mention shake 'n' bake ? How about sleeping with the fish, or a more traditional burial at sea ? No earth or fire there.

For some reason I don't fancy a ham sandwhich right now. I think I'm dreaming I'm thinking. I think. It's nearly 3am vermin, time for you to wake up !

No gravity- Mass sucks

speed of light is not constant- it changes for every medium

their is no speed of dark- just the absence of light that sucks

gravity waves- you just can't see its hands

are we the only intelligent life in the universe- who says were intelligent and if so what a waste of space

the earth is not flat- I'm just always on top and everything slopes away

faster than light travel is easy- shine the light backward and step forward

are we evolving or devolving- as a species we still can't relate to a jar of fruit flies to the earth and Hegelian tactics to politicians

as for when will the next meteor strike- a Continent killer is over due the last one took out north America 10,000 years ago (very approx.) who is next?

Is there a God -my dog thinks I'm his god, I drive mine to irritation with questions

anything else?
