Can Industry Quench the Thristy?

Posted October 12, 2007 8:14 AM

Worldwide, one out of six people have no access to decent drinking water. For many, pollution and lack of sanitation is the problem. For others, long distances from the water supply and poor distribution are the barriers. Low-tech, inexpensive solutions — such as simple pumping and filtration systems — abound, as does the stockpile of discarded but usable equipment. There are thousands of pump distributors around the globe. Can industry step in where governments can't?

I would like to suggest that one solution would be a worldwide effort by pump and industrial equipment suppliers to develop a stockpile of equipment and a web-based list of functional surplus available equipment (on a country by country basis) that could be made available to NGO's working to build water purification systems in rural 3rd world villages. Engineers from the NGO's would then be able to draw upon this equipment for installation of systems. [Solution of the worlds water problems will only occur when everyone in a position to help does just that, even if it costs them some profits.]

The resources are spent in the effort to wage WAR. Should peace and harmony with ones neighbors be the sought after goal, there is enough resources, energy, and technology to supply ALL of the basic necessities of the entire world 100 times over.

WE just need a different equation defining all levels of social responsibility. What we have now only takes care of those who have more than they can ever use for multiple lifetimes. That cannot change as long as change is not permissible for those who need it the most.

Just a reminder, lack of sanitation is often western shorthand no flushing toilets. Remember composting toilets are a far better solution in many cases (if done correctly).

the notion of reverse osmosis as a water purification medium is or will be old news and the requirement for high performance pumps in this application non existant .For sure to get the fluid to or from there but thats about all.to purify water you have to know about water and i don't think alot of people do in fact i'm sure they don't
