Are Engineering Profs Really That Bad?

Posted October 23, 2007 8:58 AM

From Design News:

For many of our readers, this probably won't come as a surprise: Recently released surveys from The Princeton Review show engineering students aren't always pleased with their professors. Before we tell you the results of the survey, though, let's stop and review a few important points: Engineering curriculums are hard; student grades in engineering tend to be on the low side of the bell-shaped curve; students with low grades are unhappy and tend to blame their professors. We know all this. Now, let's look at the results of The Princeton Review survey. In a category titled "Professors Get Low Marks," seven of the worst 10 schools had very high percentages of engineering students. The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Stevens Institute of Technology, Cal Tech and the New Jersey Institute of Technology were the worst four. Others in the bottom 10 included Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Georgia Tech and Illinois Institute of Technology. The results were part of a multiple-choice survey administered to more than 120,000 college students. In the "Professors Get Low Marks" category, students were asked, "Are your instructors good teachers?"

Being a good teacher does not only rely on knowledge of engineering facts. You need to know HOW to TEACH. An engineering school will usually be much tougher than the local county college or even a state college. There demands are much higher because they don't just hand out papers, they hand out degrees. When a doctor makes mistakes they bury the mistake. When an engineer makes a mistake, it's in plain view for all to see and may injure many more than one. A good professor will always have this in mind and challenge his students much more thoroughly. After all, only those serious about there chosen field will endeavor to succeed and succeed well.

Taking an art class in a college or university may take a little effort to get an A. Give it your best and they will usually pass you. Go to a great Art or Graphics School and you can Bet your Booty they aint gonna be easy on you.

With this in mind, would you want some flunky teaching your engineer how to design his part of a 300 story building and passing him because he TRIED.

It is a infact engineering curriculums are hard to cope within span of say 3/4years , most professors are from engineering background they have same experience when they were student , they do lac presentation skills to freshers , by all means we think professor to be a teacher like junior schools also we find professors from other stream of science having Phd better presentator and great knowledge for "how to teach" , wheneve a engineering graduate gets a job in R/D ,Marketing ,Production ,Controls , they are priliminary trained to do so , like wise professor should be trained to teach apart from self learning policy , i experieced myself while studing engineering lab assistant basically from science stream better instructors than highly qualified professors

The biggest problem is "tenure"! Once a professor achieves it he/she can do as they please, regardless of whether students "get it" or not.

Professors need to be held to a higher standard than how many papers/publications they have circulating!
