Excess Female To Male Births In Canada Linked To Chronic Dioxin Exposure

Posted October 23, 2007 11:35 AM

From ScienceDaily: Latest Science News:

Almost 90 Canadian communities have experienced a shift in the normal 51:49 ratio of male to female births, so that more girls than boys are being born, according to two new studies. The researcher identified inverted male sex ratios, sometimes as profound as 46:54 in almost all of the communities studied. James Argo, who headed the research, attributes this so-called "inverted sex ratio" of the residents in those communities to dioxin air pollutants from oil refineries, paper mills, metal smelters and other sources. The studies analyzed information in the Environmental Quality Database (EQDB), an inventory of pollution sources, cancer data, and other factors developed for Canadian government research on how early exposure to environmental contaminants affects the health of Canadians.

Take a handful of darts, throw them at a wall, and then go and draw a bulls-eye around the cluster. Or is this an answer in search of a question? This sounds very similar to the hysteria raised about twenty-eight years ago when activists claimed living near power lines and the EM fields caused childhood cancers, etc. Of course, "researchers" went to these locations and "proved" how this was so.

In 1995, PBS's Frontline investigated and basically blew all these "studies" out of the water and de-bunked the whole thing. Thank goodness for a refreshing breath of sanity. The hysteria it caused was no small thing. When I had a rental house, a prospective renter had inquired about where the refrigerator was in relation to the living room couch because she was concerned about the EM fields given off by the compressor motor since it runs so often. I believe she even bought one of these EM fields sniffers. Needless to say, we did not rent to that whacko as I can only imagine all the "bad" things that would happen to her and her family in my rental property. ($$$) Ignorant people, awestruck by "science", unwilling to question, and sheepishly follow anything that sounds remotely plausible, are very dangerous indeed.

It seems like there is always a class or group of people in search of a "cause". They are not happy unless they have something to champion for.

There was been quite a few studies that proved the acidity of the environment, (and mother) will make a difference in the probability of the sex of the child. High acidity = girl, Alkaline = Boy.

The reversal can be easily contributed to pollution and acid rain.

Well, if this results in more Canadian hotties like Rachel McAdams and Natasha Henstridge in future, then how bad can it be?

If there is anybody here who is open minded about it all, they could of course google "dioxines in plastics" and see what happens.

It is not only the stated causes in the article that produce dioxines so it seems. This sounds very much like another thread here on cr4 about the giant plastic garbish island in the pacific.
