Risky spacewalk will test astronaut's skill

Posted November 02, 2007 10:34 AM

From CNN.com - Technology:

NASA officials hustled Friday to finish planning a riskier-than-usual spacewalk to save a ripped solar wing at the international space station. Astronaut Scott Parazynski will attempt a repair to the damaged solar array on Saturday. Repairing the solar panel, one of two power problems plaguing the station, is the top priority for the final days of shuttle Discovery's mission. NASA says one of the problems must be solved before any more shuttles can fly to the orbiting outpost. The space agency is focusing on the wing because further damage could force officials to junk the important -- and expensive -- piece of equipment. The agency hopes to send veteran spacewalker Scott Parazynski to conduct the repairs on Saturday. It will be a difficult and potentially dangerous mission for Parazynski, who runs the risk of being shocked as he tries to fix the damaged panel.

'It will be a difficult and potentially dangerous mission for Parazynski,'

Hang on, the suggestion here is that space travel is a safe occupation! At least 19 US astronauts have 'died in action' as it were, at least 10 on the ground, and at least 8 cosmonauts, as far as I can remember.

Given that there have been a total of 463 people in space, only 26 of whom have actually left low Earth orbit, you have an 8% chance of copping it anyway. These folk are heroic enough without having to labour the point.

Or is NASA still trying to make space flight as exciting as going to the local store?

One moment, please. Some qualification. No-one has actually died while in space. They have only died either trying to get there or trying to get back. So far, that is.

That's better. Please continue.

Are, well....the qualification, I think, was travel, although Gus Grissom & co might have something to say about that...
