Flying Robots form Surveillance Squadrons

Pathfinder Tags: military surveillance UAVs

Teaming multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for "persistent surveillance" offers new possibilities for the military. Concept testing prior to real-world scale-up shows that multiple UAVs can be successfully controlled and operated by a central computer directing individual computers, one for each UAV. The central computer uses positioning information obtained from video cameras to set different objectives for the individual UAVs. Look here for demonstration videos.

Having been involved in full scale UAV testing and operations, what I really like about this is the 'playpen environment' created to quickly check out advanced concepts. Hmmm.... one day to plan AND execute a rather complex multi-UAV test? Brilliant!

At least these guys are not wasting a lot of cash! And their 'toys' may just save some-one's skin some day...
