Flatulent Kangaroos Could Save Planet

Posted December 07, 2007 11:01 AM

From Fox News:

Australian scientists plan to isolate, and possibly transfer to other species, the 'roos digestive bacteria, which unusually produce almost none of the potent greenhouse gas methane. One of the primary sources of atmospheric methane is the digestive tracts of millions of cows, sheep, pigs and, um, humans. It's the byproduct of trillions of bacteria, properly called digestive flora, without which no mammal could get nutrition from starches and plant fibers. With each belch and colonic gaseous emission, large plant-eating livestock contribute a bit more to global warming.

Those Aussies are clever, but not so clever.

But I always wondered why they transferred sheep and cattle to the dry continent.

After all, kangaroo meat has almost zero fat, is very tasty, cooks well, and the kangaroos can exist on far poorer grass etc than the sheep or cattle, who die in their millions, each time there is a drought.....

As is being popularised in my country that every house should plant atleast one tree, I foresee that the day is not far when it will be mandatory to have Kangaroos as pets, or atleast till the 'roos digestive bacteria is extracted and made available for use of other animals. ......... and what you'd say when the 'roo farts - Bless you?

Why would it be mandatory? According to the original post, kangaroos do not reduce greenhouse gas, they only go about their lives producing less than the average ruminant.

Perhaps, if mandating something is required, we should mandate scepticism/proofs and restrict hysteria.

Better out than in!
